On October 30th 2008 the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) invited several of longtime supporters to experience the first installation at BBOX, the MICA’s new experimental theater. BBOX is located in the Gateway building, the  newest addition to MICA’s campus.Gateway Building

The event included a reception in the building’s open courtyard of the Gateway building followed by a catered dinner for 150 guests inside BBOX. MICA commissioned Flux Studio’s Glenn Shrum, the architectural lighting designer who also designed the architectural lighting for the Gateway building, to do a lighting installation inside BBOX celebrating the donors and the space itself.  MICA also commissioned James Rouvelle and Jason Sloane to design an interactive sound piece for the performance for the courtyard.

The artists, all members of MICA faculty, saw the educational potential of this opportunity and decided to bring these projects to their respective classes, Glenn Shrum’s Visual Space: The Lighted Environment, and James Rouvelle and Jason Sloane’s Interactive Media thesis studio. They also made the decision to combine the two parts of the piece, the courtyard performance and the BBOX installation into one integrated concept using sound, light and interactivity.

The result was Reflection Resonance, a 2 part 2 day performance and dynamic installation environment, which used sound, animation, lighting and sculpture. The featured element of the lighting design was 3M Radiant Light Film, which served as the inspiration for the installation concept. All Radiant Light Film material used was generously donated by 3M.
